Shaligram Sheela sculpture in Jomsom becomes centre of religious faith

Mustang: The 22-foot-tall Shaligram Sheela sculpture, carved into a rock on the bank of the Kaligandaki River in Jomsom, Ward 4 of Gharapjhong Rural Municipality, has been becoming a centre of religious faith.

Sculptors from the Nepal Academy of Fine Arts carved a huge rock by the Kaligandaki River into a Shaligram Sheela-shaped sculpture during a 15-day sculpture workshop was conducted in Jomsom from April 20 to May 4, and since then the place has been becoming an attractive spot for religious tourists.

The workshop was organized by Gharpjhong Rural Municipality and co-financed by the Integrated Service Office Mustang, in coordination with the Nepal Academy of Fine Arts.

More than 36 sculptors who participated in the workshop transformed the boulders on the banks of the Kaligandaki River into various sculptures.

The sculptors sculpted about a dozen and a half boulders on the Kaligandaki River as artistic sculptures, reflecting the historical, religious, cultural, social, and biological diversity of the district.

During the workshop, the sculptors had created artistic sculptures from the rocks by the Kaligandaki River, including Shaligram Sheela, Lord Shiva, Parvati, Vishnu, Buddha, Himalayan snow leopard, Himalayan sheep, Buddhist stupas, Mani, Chorten, and other heritage pieces, said Mohan Singh Lalchan, chairperson of Gharpjhong Rural Municipality.

Lalchan said that of the one and a half dozen sculptures carved by the sculptors, everyone’s attention is now drawn to the world’s largest Shaligram Sheela replica.

The Shaligram Sheela (fossilized ammonite stone) is considered as symbolizing Lord Vishnu by the Hindus.
