Constitution Day and National Day: Gen-Z Protests Reflect Dissatisfaction Over Corruption, Says PM Karki

Kathmandu: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has said that the demonstrations led by Gen-Z youth earlier this month reflect growing aspirations, rising public awareness, and deep dissatisfaction with prevailing corruption in the country.

Addressing the main ceremony of Constitution Day and National Day 2082 at Tundikhel, PM Karki noted that the movement of September 8–9 emerged from shortcomings in governance, unfulfilled expectations, and frustrations linked to prosperity and development.

“I view this movement as a measure of the health of our democracy, for democracy is about listening to people’s voices, engaging in dialogue, and seeking solutions,” she said.

The Prime Minister stressed that the protests were also a consequence of the country’s inability to fully uphold commitments to democratic values, civil liberties, fundamental rights, press freedom, rule of law, and good governance. She added that advancements in information technology and global governance practices have heightened awareness among young people, who now seek greater participation in policymaking and governance.

PM Karki emphasized that issues raised by the youth including employment, quality of life, transparency, equality, and anti-corruption are national agendas shared across generations. She committed her interim government to addressing these aspirations and pledged to hold general elections on March 5, 2026 (Fagun 21, 2082 BS) in a fair, impartial, and fear-free environment.

“The Gen-Z movement has reminded us that improvements are still needed in many areas. The young generation wants to see successful governance practices applied in Nepal, and this government will work with firm determination to respond,” she said.

The Prime Minister also called for unity among political parties, civil servants, the private sector, development partners, and citizens in the campaign for reconstruction and development, following the damages caused during recent unrest.

On the occasion, PM Karki paid tribute to martyrs of past people’s movements as well as the recent Gen-Z protests, extended condolences to bereaved families, and wished for the recovery of the injured.

The ceremony was attended by President Ramchandra Paudel, Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav, Chief Justice Prakashman Singh Raut, Speaker Devraj Ghimire, National Assembly Chairman Narayan Prasad Dahal, former Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, senior government officials, security chiefs, and foreign dignitaries.
