Kathmandu: The scale of the Bhotekoshi flood disaster has widened sharply, with 734 bodies recovered and 2,498 people still unaccounted for, according to the latest update from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).
Bodies have been recovered from eight districts, with the highest numbers reported in Chitwan (259) and Nawalparasi East (184). Other recoveries include 82 in Nawalparasi West, 58 in Gorkha, 52 in Nuwakot, 50 in Dhading, 36 in Tanahun and 13 in Rasuwa.
The missing list includes 933 hydropower project workers, 562 people in Rasuwa and 115 in Nuwakot, along with 27 Nepal Police personnel, 45 Nepal Army personnel, 13 Armed Police Force personnel, 15 customs officials and four immigration officials.
Foreign nationals account for 589 of those missing, while 127 Nepalis travelling with foreign tourists are also unaccounted for. Three people associated with Langtang National Park are among those listed.
Rescue operations have so far brought 8,186 people to safety, including 2,974 rescued by the Nepal Army, 2,699 by Nepal Police and 2,513 by the Armed Police Force.
A total of 279 people trapped inside hydropower tunnels were airlifted over two days, while 227 foreign nationals have been evacuated.
The disaster has left 242 people injured, with surgical medical teams deployed in affected areas. Unidentified bodies are being kept at 21 hospitals across districts as authorities continue efforts to establish their identities.
The government has released Rs. 1 billion each for Rasuwa and Nuwakot, Rs. 500 million for Dhading and Rs. 675 million to 15 local governments for relief operations.
A total of 37 truckloads of food and non-food materials have been dispatched, along with seven helicopter flights delivering supplies. Two tonnes of food were sent to Uttargaya and Dhunche, while communication equipment has also been deployed.
