Kathmandu: Nepali-origin physician Dr. Bishal Bhandari has received a Maryland Governor’s Citation in recognition of his contributions to healthcare advocacy and efforts to promote health equity in the United States.
Dr. Bhandari, who serves as Chair of the Health Committee of Maryland’s Commission on South Asian American Affairs, was honored during the inaugural South Asian American Health Summit held on October 10, 2026, in Rockville, Maryland.
The summit brought together healthcare professionals, policymakers and community leaders to discuss health disparities affecting South Asian communities and explore ways to improve access to inclusive, evidence-based healthcare.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Bhandari highlighted the underrepresentation of South Asian populations in clinical research and emphasized the need for medical guidelines that address their distinct health risks, particularly cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
He called for stronger healthcare advocacy, more inclusive clinical research and evidence-based policies to address persistent gaps in healthcare outcomes among South Asian communities.
Dr. Bhandari also stressed that recognizing these disparities among policymakers and healthcare leaders is an essential first step toward achieving meaningful improvements in healthcare.
His recognition highlights the growing contributions of Nepali-origin professionals to international healthcare discussions, particularly in advancing health equity and strengthening the connection between medical research, public policy and community needs.
The honor also reflects the expanding role of Nepali professionals in the diaspora in promoting healthcare awareness, influencing inclusive policies and contributing to public health initiatives beyond Nepal.
