Mustang: Prime Minister Balendra Shah has pledged to advocate for stronger international cooperation to address the growing risks and disasters associated with climate change.
In a message delivered to the Gharapajhong Climate Change Convention 2026, which began in Mustang on Tuesday, Prime Minister Shah said tackling the impacts of climate change should be treated as a shared responsibility of the global community.
Shah is expected to use international platforms to draw greater attention to the need for collective action against the escalating effects of climate change. According to his message, he will highlight the climate-related challenges, losses and damages faced by Nepal, along with possible measures to address them, during his address to the ongoing 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The prime minister will also seek national and international attention toward the differing impacts of climate change across Nepal’s Himalayan, hilly and Tarai regions.
The message noted that rising global temperatures have contributed to glacier melting, the collapse of ice formations, increased flows in glacial rivers, drying water sources and increasingly unpredictable weather patterns.
“These changes have increasingly affected livelihoods, agriculture and biodiversity, particularly in the Himalayan region,” the message stated.
Welcoming the convention being held in Jomsom, Mustang, Shah also emphasized the importance of stronger coordination and cooperation among the federal, provincial and local governments to advance climate action.
The two-day convention is being organized by Gharapajhong Rural Municipality and focuses on the risks and challenges arising from the climate crisis. Federal Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment Gita Chaudhary inaugurated the event.
The gathering brings together chiefs of all 753 local governments and representatives from all 77 District Coordination Committees. Participants are also reviewing the loss of lives and property caused by the August 26 Bhotekoshi flood in Rasuwa.
The convention is being held as Nepal continues to deal with the aftermath of the devastating flood triggered by an avalanche in the Bhotekoshi area, which swept into the Trishuli River and caused significant loss of lives and property.
