Kathmandu: President of the Nepal Chamber of Commerce Kamlesh Kumar Agrawal has said that the digital initiative launched by the Federation of Nepal Gold, Silver, Gem and Jewellery Associations will play a significant role in modernizing, enhancing transparency, and streamlining Nepal’s gold and silver business.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony of the Federation’s new website and mobile application as the chief guest, President Agrawal said the gold and silver business is not merely a commercial activity but a living heritage deeply connected to Nepal’s history, culture, traditions, art, and civilization.
He stated that integrating the skills of Nepali artisans, indigenous craftsmanship, and traditional jewellery designs with modern technology, branding, and international markets would help establish “Made in Nepal” jewellery as a distinctive global brand.
President Agrawal noted that the continued rise in international gold prices has created both opportunities and challenges for the industry. Referring to the Government’s decision in the Fiscal Year 2083/84 (2026/27) budget to increase the tax on the sale of gold, silver, and jewellery made from these metals by an additional 0.5 percent, he said the measure would place additional pressure on legitimate businesses.
He emphasized the need to broaden the tax base, strengthen tax administration, and effectively control illegal trade. He also identified the shortage of skilled artisans, the migration of craftsmen abroad, security concerns, and gold smuggling as some of the major challenges facing the sector.
Highlighting the importance of collaboration, President Agrawal stressed the need for effective coordination among the business community, banks, insurance companies, and security agencies. He reiterated that the private sector should be recognized as a key partner in the country’s economic development and reaffirmed the Nepal Chamber of Commerce’s commitment to promoting business-friendly policies, ensuring a stable tax system, protecting skilled artisans, and supporting the promotion of Nepali handicrafts.
On the occasion, President Agrawal officially launched the Federation’s newly developed website and mobile application.
Speaking at the event, Kisan Sunar, President of the Federation of Nepal Gold, Silver, Gem and Jewellery Associations, said the website and mobile application have been introduced to transform the traditional gold and silver business into a more modern, systematic, and technology-driven industry.
He said the Federation, together with its provincial and district associations, will be connected through a unified digital platform to facilitate membership records, information sharing, administrative services, and data management.
According to Sunar, each district and provincial association will have its own dedicated website under the new digital system. Services such as membership renewal, identity cards, certificates, and other administrative processes will be available online, while the cost of sending SMS notifications will be significantly reduced.
He further stated that the mobile application will enable members to post products and services they wish to buy or sell, establish direct business-to-business (B2B) connections, analyze historical prices of gold, silver, and the US dollar, and generate estimated bills within seconds that can be shared directly with customers via WhatsApp.
The Federation expressed confidence that the new digital platform will play a vital role in enhancing member services, improving access to market information, increasing transparency in business transactions, promoting trade, and strengthening Nepal’s gold and silver industry’s connection with international markets.
