Kathmandu: The Nepal Chamber of Commerce and the Spanish Chamber of Commerce have agreed to strengthen bilateral economic cooperation by enhancing institutional relations, promoting trade and investment opportunities, and facilitating business exchanges between Nepal and Spain.
The understanding was reached during a meeting held at the Nepal Chamber of Commerce, Chamber Bhawan, during the visit of Ms. Inmaculada Riera i Rene, Director General of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce.
During the meeting, both sides expressed optimism that Nepal’s improving political environment and strategic geographical location between India and China provide favorable opportunities for expanding business partnerships and attracting investment.
The two chambers agreed to work towards signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the end of 2026 or early 2027 to formally establish and institutionalize future cooperation.
As part of the proposed collaboration, the Spanish Chamber plans to organize a business delegation comprising around eight to nine Spanish companies to visit Nepal in February–March 2027. The visit is expected to include a business forum aimed at connecting Spanish and Nepali entrepreneurs and exploring potential investment opportunities.
The discussions also highlighted the importance of strengthening government-to-government engagement, including facilitating business visa processes, encouraging official visits, and exploring opportunities emerging from ongoing European Union–India trade negotiations that could create benefits for Nepal.
Both chambers identified several priority sectors for cooperation, including renewable energy, hydropower, solar and wind energy, water management, smart cities, transportation, tourism, hospitality, agriculture, and food processing.
The meeting also highlighted Nepal’s export potential in high-value products such as premium orthodox tea, organic coffee, large cardamom, medicinal and aromatic herbs, essential oils, pashmina, handmade carpets, handicrafts, handmade paper, silver jewellery, organic honey, and bamboo products.
Meanwhile, Spain can contribute advanced technology and expertise in areas including renewable energy, irrigation, agricultural machinery, medical equipment, water treatment, and tourism management.
Both sides emphasized the need to promote bilateral trade through participation in international trade fairs in Madrid, Barcelona, and Kathmandu, while also expanding digital trade and e-commerce connections between the two countries.
Spanish companies with experience in South Asia were identified as potential partners for Nepal’s development priorities, particularly in infrastructure development, clean energy, and sustainable investment.
Concluding the meeting, representatives from both chambers expressed confidence that stronger institutional partnerships, regular business exchanges, and increased private-sector collaboration would significantly contribute to expanding Spain–Nepal trade and investment relations in the coming years.
