Kathmandu: Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, Coordinator of the Nepali Communist Party (NCP), has warned that the government will face consequences if it continues arresting prominent individuals without sufficient justification.
Speaking to journalists at Singha Durbar on Monday, Prachanda expressed dissatisfaction over the arrest of former Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana and said such incidents should not be repeated.
Prachanda said that if the government’s intention was to make an example of one person to intimidate others, it would have serious consequences.
“The facts will gradually come to light,” he said, referring to the government’s handling of the matter.
He further argued that if Rana faced a genuine security threat, the government should have increased security at his residence instead of taking him into custody.
“The claim of a security threat is merely an excuse,” Prachanda said.
Rana was taken into police custody from his residence on Sunday and was later released into his family’s care. Police have said he was brought into custody because of a security threat, while questions have been raised over the legal basis and procedure surrounding the detention.
Meanwhile, commenting on Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s address to the United Nations General Assembly, Prachanda said it was natural for the prime minister to raise issues he considered timely and relevant.
