Kathmandu: Members of the National Assembly have called on the government to declare a national day of mourning over the devastating Bhote Koshi River flood in Rasuwa on August 26.
Speaking during the zero hour on Tuesday, Nepali Congress MP Yubaraj Sharma urged the government to declare August 26 a national day of mourning, stressing that priority should be given to search, rescue, relief and rehabilitation rather than publicity.
Nepali Communist Party (NCP) MP Madan Kumari Shah (Garima) also called for national mourning and the lowering of the national flag to half-mast.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), 987 bodies had been recovered as of 9 AM Tuesday, while 3,916 people remained out of contact, 279 were injured and 11,814 had been rescued.
A total of 20,819 security personnel have been deployed for rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations.
Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sobita Gautam presented the National Dalit Commission fiscal year 2023/24 annual report to the National Assembly on behalf of Prime Minister Balen.
Speaker Narayan Prasad Dahal requested members to contribute their 15 days’ salary to the disaster relief fund.
The next National Assembly meeting is scheduled for 1:15 PM on Tuesday, September 8.
