Kathmandu: The fourth edition of the monthly virtual translation dialogue series ‘Anuvad Vimarsh’ was successfully held recently, featuring poet, lyricist, and translator Pratisara Sayami as the guest speaker.

The session drew enthusiastic participation from language enthusiasts, writers, and literary scholars across the diaspora.

Sayami shared the journey of her translation practice, revealing that she formally began her translation work in 2025, starting with translations from Nepal Bhasha to Nepali. However, she noted that her very first attempt at translation was actually in the reverse and unexpected direction, translating from Urdu into Nepal Bhasha, an experience she described as both challenging and deeply enriching.

Recounting her early days, Sayami shared the initial struggles she encountered while working with Nepali idioms and colloquial expressions. She said, “Nepali idioms and colloquial words made me terribly restless. I would sit for hours, sometimes days, turning the phrase over and over in my mind, searching, discarding, searching again, until finally the right word arrived. That moment of finding it felt like a small victory every single time.”

The audience resonated deeply with her candid reflections. She emphasized that translation is not merely a linguistic exercise but an act of cultural preservation and creative responsibility.

The ‘Anuvad Vimarsh’ series by Society of Translators Nepal continues to serve as a vital platform for celebrating and critically examining the art of translation across Nepal’s rich multilingual literary landscape.
