Nepal: TikTok has announced the launch of its in-app Election Centre in Nepal, a dedicated information hub designed to help users access accurate, reliable, and authoritative information ahead of the country’s upcoming General Election. The initiative builds on TikTok’s election integrity efforts across more than 200 elections globally since 2020 and reflects the platform’s ongoing commitment to connecting users with trusted information while combating harmful content.
As part of this initiative, TikTok has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Election Commission, Nepal (ECN) to support election integrity efforts. Additionally, TikTok conducted a capacity-building Election Integrity Workshop at the ECN premises, focusing on responsible digital engagement, combating misinformation, and strengthening awareness of election integrity among key stakeholders.
The in-app Election Centre has been developed in collaboration with the ECN to provide users with easy access to official and trustworthy election-related information in one place. The hub offers an overview of Nepal’s electoral process, details on how and where to vote, guidance on identifying misinformation, and direct links to official ECN resources. TikTok will also apply election-related tags to relevant content and selected searches, directing users to the Election Centre.
“Elections are a critical moment for any democracy, and TikTok recognizes its responsibility as a platform that helps shape public discourse. Through this partnership, we aim to support informed participation, promote peace, and provide a safe space for positive digital expression. The Election Centre is designed to help ensure that people in Nepal can access authoritative voting information where they already are,” said Ferdous Mottakin, Head of Public Policy and Government Relations, South Asia at TikTok.
The launch forms part of TikTok’s broader initiatives to provide users with context about content and accounts on the platform. TikTok enforces strict policies against harmful misinformation and deceptive practices, supported by advanced moderation technologies and thousands of safety professionals worldwide, including a dedicated Elections Taskforce for Nepal.
Under these policies, harmful misinformation is prohibited. Unverified content may be labeled, made ineligible for recommendation, or users may be prompted to reconsider before sharing such content. TikTok also collaborates with more than 20 global fact-checking organizations to verify content accuracy and ensure effective policy enforcement.
To maintain platform authenticity, TikTok prohibits covert influence operations, impersonation, and artificial engagement methods such as bot networks. The company regularly reports enforcement actions through its Transparency Centre.
Furthermore, TikTok requires creators to label realistic AI-generated content (AIGC) and has implemented advanced AI labeling technologies, including C2PA Content Credentials, to identify AI-generated material produced on other platforms. Harmful AI-generated content, including misleading portrayals of public figures, remains strictly prohibited regardless of labeling.
TikTok will continue to provide updates on its election integrity efforts through its Global Election Integrity Hub in the lead-up to Nepal’s General Election.
