Kathmandu: No 1 pro Niraj Tamang and No 10 Tanka Bahadur Karki advanced to the final of the Surya Nepal NPGA Match Play, the sixth event under Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2025-25, at the Royal Nepal Golf Club today.
Defending champion Niraj defeated No 4 Sanjay Lama 6&5 and Tanka beat No 6 Rabi Khadka 3&2 in the semi-final matches. Niraj was 2-up against Sanjay at the end of front nine, and he wrapped up the convincing victory on the 13th hole.
Tanka was 3-up after nine holes before Rabi reduced the deficit to one after winning the 10th and 11th holes. But Tanka came back strongly to complete the victory on the 16th hole.
Earlier, Tanka registered the biggest upset of the tournament beating No 2 Bhuvan Nagarkoti 2&1 in the quarter-finals, while Niraj defeated ninth seed Rame Magar 2&1. In other last eight matches, Sanjay defeated fifth seed Jayram Shrestha 1-up on the final hole, while Rabi beat No 3 Dinesh Prajapati on the first extra hole after a tie on regular 18 holes.
Niraj and Tanka will contest in a 36-hole final on Friday, while Rabi and Sanjay will play for third place over 18 holes.
The three-day match play tournament, organised by PGA Nepal under the sponsorship of Surya Nepal Pvt. Ltd., featured the top 16 players from the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2024-25 Order of Merit.
The tournament carries a total prize purse of NPR 425,000. The winner will receive NPR 100,000, while the runner-up will earn NPR 75,000. The third and fourth place finishers will receive NPR 56,000 and NPR 42,000 respectively. The four losing quarterfinalists will each earn NPR 18,000, and eight players eliminated in the first round will receive NPR 10,000 each
