Kathmandu: In a pioneering move within Nepal’s education landscape, Premier International IB Continuum School has become the first school in the country to formally introduce an At-Home Gadget Use Policy, aimed at tackling the growing concern of screen addiction and supporting student well-being.
Recognizing the emotional and academic toll of unregulated screen time, Premier’s new policy extends its educational philosophy into students’ homes setting a powerful precedent for holistic digital wellness in the age of technology.
What makes this initiative groundbreaking is its collaborative design. Co-created with the Parent Representative Body, the policy features age-appropriate guidelines from Early Years to Senior High School. It encourages a healthy balance between tech use and real-life connection by limiting screen exposure, recommending high-quality content, encouraging adult supervision, and reviving gadget-free family time.
While global governments from France’s school phone ban to US regulations on minors and social media—have taken steps to manage digital risks, Premier leads Nepal’s first contextualized, school-led solution. The policy addresses rising concerns over screen dependency, anxiety, attention deficits, social detachment, and online safety placing student wellness at the heart of the school’s learning culture.
“This is not about banning gadgets,” said Prabina Thapa, Academic Director at Premier International School. “It’s about protecting our children’s ability to focus, grow socially, stay safe online, and feel well. With our parent community, we are building a digital culture where technology empowers learning without harming it.”
As Nepal’s first institution to introduce such a progressive policy, Premier has set a national benchmark. This bold move calls on other schools and policymakers to recognize the urgency of student mental health in the digital era and act collectively.
