India’s Modi Renews Strategic Ties with Maldives

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a high-profile visit to the Maldives on Saturday, aimed at reinforcing bilateral ties through major infrastructure commitments and financial assistance to the strategically located island nation.

The visit comes at a critical juncture, as India seeks to maintain its influence in the Indian Ocean region, particularly after the election of President Mohamed Muizzu in 2023, whose initial anti-India stance raised concerns in New Delhi over the Maldives’ growing alignment with China.

In a sign of renewed engagement, Prime Minister Modi announced a fresh $565 million credit line to support the Maldives’ development projects, while also reducing annual repayments on a previous loan from $51 million to $29 million. The financial aid is expected to ease the country’s foreign exchange crisis, despite its otherwise booming tourism industry.

During a state banquet on Friday, President Muizzu described India as the Maldives’ “closest and most trusted partner,” acknowledging New Delhi’s consistent support during critical times. He emphasized ongoing cooperation in areas such as security, trade, healthcare, education, and housing.

“India has long stood as the Maldives’ closest and most trusted partner. We deeply value the friendship of India and are grateful for the timely assistance your country has extended to us in moments of need,” Muizzu remarked.

The two leaders also discussed the possibility of a free trade agreement and celebrated the inauguration of multiple India-funded infrastructure projects, including new roads, a 4,000-unit housing complex, and the headquarters of the Maldivian Ministry of Defence.

President Muizzu, who initially called for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel operating search-and-rescue aircraft, has since softened his stance, highlighting the broader value of Maldives-India ties.

As Modi departed on Saturday following the 60th Independence Day celebrations in Malé, both leaders reaffirmed their countries’ shared vision for the future.

“India remains committed to supporting the aspirations of the Maldivian people,” Modi wrote on social platform X.

With key global shipping lanes running through its chain of 1,192 islands, the Maldives holds enormous strategic importance. As the two largest bilateral lenders to the island nation, India and China continue to shape its geopolitical trajectory in the heart of the Indian Ocean.
