Dongfeng Launches Affordable Nammi 06 EV SUV in South Africa

Kathmandu: Chinese automobile manufacturer Dongfeng has officially launched the Nammi 06 electric SUV in South Africa, introducing what is currently considered the country’s most affordable fully electric SUV.

Also marketed as the “Vigo” in certain international markets, the Nammi 06 becomes Dongfeng’s third model available in South Africa, joining the Box hatchback and 007 Premium sedan. The launch is viewed as a major step toward making electric mobility more accessible in the African market.

The entry-level Nammi 06 E1 variant has been launched at a starting price of R499,000, undercutting the Geely E5/EX5(previously South Africa’s most affordable fully electric SUV) by approximately R200,000.

Both available variants are powered by a 120kW front-mounted electric motor producing 230Nm of torque. According to the company, the SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 7.8 seconds.

The standard E1 model features a 44.94kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack offering a claimed driving range of up to 401 km under the Chinese CLTC testing standard, while the WLTP-estimated range stands at around 300 km. The model supports DC fast charging up to 60kW, allowing the battery to charge from 30 percent to 80 percent in roughly 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, the higher-spec Nammi 06 E3 variant, priced at R579,000, comes equipped with a larger 51.87kWh battery pack. The company claims the model delivers up to 471 km of range under the CLTC standard and around 350 km under WLTP testing conditions. The E3 also supports faster DC charging speeds of up to 167kW, enabling a 30 to 80 percent charge in approximately 18 minutes.

The SUV comes equipped with several modern features, including:

  • 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen
  • 8.88-inch digital instrument cluster
  • Wireless phone charging
  • Six-speaker audio system
  • Rear-view camera and parking sensors
  • Six airbags
  • Automatic climate control
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Traction Control and Brake Assist
  • Hill-start assist
  • Leatherette seats
  • 500-liter cargo space

The Nammi 06 is available in five color options: black, white, silver, orange, and green.

Dongfeng, one of China’s “Big Four” state-owned automotive manufacturers, has recently strengthened its international positioning through a joint venture partnership with Nissan. Industry analysts believe the move could help improve the brand’s global recognition and credibility.

The launch comes amid growing interest in electric vehicles worldwide as consumers seek alternatives to rising petrol and diesel costs. With its aggressive pricing strategy, Dongfeng aims to position the Nammi 06 as an affordable entry point into electric mobility for South African consumers.
