Supporting Families with TikTok’s Safety Tools for Healthy Digital Habits

Kathmandu: TikTok has introduced a comprehensive set of tools designed to help families ensure that teens use the platform safely and responsibly. Building on the success of its Family Pairing feature, TikTok continues to enhance user safety by releasing new tools and settings to promote healthy digital habits and family engagement.

Through Family Pairing, parents and guardians can link their accounts to their teens’ accounts to manage screen time and content exposure. The feature allows parents to:

  • Set daily screen time limits and schedule breaks.
  • Manage direct messaging options and control who can comment on or download videos.
  • Adjust account discoverability and privacy preferences.

TikTok’s system also includes age-appropriate safeguards to create a safer digital environment. For users under 16, direct messaging is disabled by default, and push notifications are muted during nighttime hours. Teens under 18 automatically receive a 60-minute daily screen-time limit, with age-verification technology ensuring a responsible experience.

Parents can now view their teens’ privacy settings and receive notifications when public videos are posted, encouraging open family dialogue about online behavior, appropriate content, and screen time balance. TikTok emphasizes that these tools are not just for parental control but are also designed to promote conversations that help teens develop self-awareness and responsible digital habits.

Earlier this year, TikTok introduced a Guided Meditation feature integrated with its Sleep Hours setting, encouraging mindfulness and healthier nighttime routines. For users under 18, this feature is automatically enabled, replacing the “For You” feed after 10 p.m. with calming meditation prompts to support better sleep and emotional well-being. Adults can also activate this feature manually within the app’s screen-time settings.

These new tools align with TikTok’s broader Digital Safety Partnership for Families, which provides parents with practical resources and education to promote safe online engagement. TikTok now includes over 50 built-in safeguards for teens, including content filters, restricted messaging, and customizable screen-time controls.

With these features, TikTok reaffirms its commitment to creating a secure and empowering environment for users of all ages enabling families to explore, create, and connect with confidence and care.
