New Delhi: Nepal and India have agreed to deepen their bilateral security cooperation and bolster border management during the latest round of home secretary-level talks held in New Delhi on Tuesday.
The Indian delegation was led by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, while the Nepali side was headed by Home Secretary Gokarna Mani Duwadee.
According to a statement from the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs, the two sides reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral security cooperation and reaffirmed their commitment to combating trans-border criminal activities, enhancing disaster response, and improving border infrastructure.
Key topics of discussion included:
- Repair and maintenance of boundary pillars
- Curbing cross-border criminal activities
- Functionality of Border District Coordination Committees (BDCCs)
- Upgrading infrastructure at Integrated Check Posts (ICPs), roads, and railways
- Capacity building of security institutions
- Cooperation in disaster risk reduction and management
Both nations also welcomed the finalisation of the text of a Mutual Legal Assistance Agreement in criminal matters and agreed to work towards the early conclusion of a revised extradition treaty.
Given the porous nature of the Indo-Nepal border, which remains unfenced and vulnerable to misuse by criminal and terrorist elements, the dialogue emphasized the need for closer surveillance and coordination between law enforcement agencies.
It was also agreed that the next round of home secretary-level talks will be hosted by Nepal on a mutually convenient date.
