Kathmandu: In a move to meet growing demand for mobile numbers, Ncell Axiata Limited has announced it will begin issuing new SIM cards with mobile numbers starting with the 971 prefix. The distribution of these SIMs is expected to begin by July 31, 2025, following regulatory approval.
On May 28, 2025, the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) officially granted Ncell permission to use the 971 number range, as its current allocations 980, 981, 982, and 970 have reached near exhaustion due to rising user volume.
This development is part of NTA’s broader National Numbering Allocation Plan, which ensures systematic distribution of mobile number resources to telecom providers based on market needs and growth.
Ncell emphasized that mobile numbers today play a vital role beyond voice communication, including digital identity verification, OTP-based security, and access to app and web-based services. The new 971 range will help accommodate new subscribers and ensure continued service quality.
Ncell has requested all service providers, banks, financial institutions, government bodies, NGOs, and private sector stakeholders to update their systems to accept and support the new 971 range just like they currently do for existing numbers to ensure uninterrupted customer service and digital interoperability.
